Formaldehyde Testing

The International Testing Center (ITC) conducts quality, timely and accurate formaldehyde emission testing in accordance EPA TSCA VI and CARB.

The International Testing Center (ITC) conducts quality, timely and accurate formaldehyde emission testing in accordance EPA TSCA VI and CARB. In addition, linear expansion testing is conducted.

The ITC is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 as an accredited testing laboratory by the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB). The ITC is a 5,500 square foot state-of-the-art facility engineered with tomorrow’s ultra-low emitting products in mind.

As a worldwide leader in formaldehyde emission testing, we are dedicated to providing quality, accurate, and timely results.  Our emission testing capabilities include:

Regardless of which testing method you choose, you can be assured that the analysis is accurate.  Equivalency tests are performed throughout the year between small and large chambers to unquestionably demonstrate equivalent and accurate results.

The ITC is accredited to the highest available standards. View our Accreditation.

small chambers

Small Chamber Testing

ASTM D6007</P)

With dimensions of 24”x15”x8”, small chamber testing is the ideal choice for most composite wood panels or samples of other materials, as well as small objects.

Large Chamber Testing

ASTM E1333

The ITC operates three 855 cubic foot (24.21 cubic meters) large scale test chambers used exclusively for air sampling of formaldehyde emissions.

The facility features unique flexible conditioning bays built exclusively for testing larger components such as furniture. Testing is conducted according to ASTM E 1333-14 – Standard test method for Determining Formaldehyde Concentrations in Air and Emission Rates from Wood Products Using a Large Chamber. This test method and analysis produces highly accurate and precise results for formaldehyde emissions and is considered the standard to which all other test methods are compared to.

Desiccator Testing

ASTM D5582

If size efficiency is important to your sample, desiccator testing may be the choice for you.  The Desiccator testing procedure conducts formaldehyde emission analysis on much smaller samples.  It is the favored test method in many areas where space is an issue.

DNPH-HPLC

Formaldehyde Quantitation

The ITC uses the most advanced quantitation technique for formaldehyde emission quantitation.  By incorporating the DNPH-HPLC quantitation technique the ITC has the ability to report very low emission values which is critical for today’s low emitting products. Using this technique we can accurately and precisely report values much lower than traditional formaldehyde quantitation techniques.

Chromotropic Acid

Formaldehyde Quantitation

The standard formaldehyde quantitation technique remains the chromotropic acid method.  This is the method that is routinely performed in the field. The ITC routinely performs chromotropic acid quantitation for formaldehyde and has developed a training program to teach new technicians or to refresh experienced technicians on the techniques of chromotropic acid quantitation.  The training program includes:

  • Routine laboratory techniques and practices
  • Production of the Chromotropic Acid Curve calibration curve
  • Discussion of the significance and development of good calibration curve.
