The recently released second quarter Global Hotel Construction Pipeline Trend Report showed the United States led in worldwide hotel projects with 4,787 projects and 598,111 rooms, accounting for 36% of the world’s total. New York was the top city worldwide for hotel construction with 146 projects and 25,232 rooms and Los Angeles was in third place with 135 projects/22,586 rooms. Dallas and Atlanta rounded out the top five largest construction markets. The only non-US city in the top five was Chengdu, China, ranking second with 138 projects/28,009 rooms. Year-over-year, the global pipeline was down 9% for projects and 7% for rooms.
By the end of 2021, a projected 2,802 new hotels will open with 414,696 rooms. For 2022, the number is expected to rise to 3,122 hotels with 476,185 rooms. See Lodging Econometrics
