U.S. Housing Starts Shrink in May

U.S. housing starts in May were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.55 million, down 14.4% from the revised April figure and 3.5% below the comparable month last year. Single-family starts fell 9.2% from April to 1.05 million.

U.S. building permits were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.7 million, decreasing 7% from April but rising 0.2% from May 2021. Single-family authorizations dropped 5.5% from April to 1.05 million in May. See U.S. Census Bureau
