U.S. Housing Starts Drop in January

U.S. housing starts in January were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.58 million, down 6.0% from the revised December 2020 estimate and 2.3% below the comparable month in 2020. Single-family housing starts decreased 12.2% from December to 1.16 million.

U.S. building permits in January were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.88 million, growing 10.4% from December and rising 22.5% from the same month in 2020. Single-family authorizations increased 3.8% from December to 1.27 million. See U.S. Census Bureau
