U.S. Housing Starts Down in January

U.S. housing starts in January were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.64 million, decreasing 4.1% from the December 2021 estimate but 0.8% higher than the comparable month last year. Single-family housing starts fell 5.6% from December to 1.12 million.

U.S. building permits in January were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.90 million, up 0.7% from December 2021 and increasing 0.8% from the same month in 2021. Single-family authorizations rose 6.8% from the previous month to 1.21 million in January. See U.S. Census Bureau
