U.S. Furniture and Retail Sales Increase in August

Seasonally adjusted advance estimates of furniture and home furnishing retail sales rose 2.1% from July to $10.23 billion in August and were up 3.8% over the comparable month in 2019. Building material and garden equipment and supplies sales improved to a seasonally adjusted estimate of $37.3 billion, an increase of 2.0% from July, and were up 15.4% over August 2019. Furniture and home furnishings retail along with building materials are among the components that comprise the overall U.S. retail and food services sales as compiled by the Census Bureau.  In August U.S. retail and food services were estimated to be $537.5 billion, an increase of 0.6% over July and 2.6% over August 2019.
