U.S. Furniture and Retail Sales Estimates Down Slightly in October

Seasonally adjusted advance estimates of furniture and home furnishing retail sales in October rose 5.2% over the same month in 2019 to $10.4 billion but fell 0.4% from September. Building material and garden equipment and supplies sales improved to a seasonally adjusted estimate of $38.1 billion, an increase of 0.9% from September and 19.5% higher than October 2019. Furniture and home furnishings retail along with building materials are among the components that comprise the overall U.S. retail and food services sales as compiled by the Census Bureau.  In October, U.S. retail and food services were estimated to be $557.1 billion, an increase of 0.3% over September and up 5.7% from the year-ago period.
