U.S. Construction Spending Slips in May

U.S. construction spending in May was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $2.14 trillion, down 0.3% from April and 3.5% lower than the same month in 2024.

Private spending fell 0.5% from April to $1.63 trillion and was off 5.4% from May 2024. Residential expenditures decreased 0.5% to $888.9 billion and shrank 6.7% from last year. Non-residential expenditures were $737.7 billion, dropping 0.4% from April and 3.9% from the year-ago period.

Educational construction spending in the private and public sectors totaled $136.0 billion, up 0.1% from the previous month but dipped 1.1% from May 2024. Construction spending on healthcare was $68.8 billion, growing 0.4% from April but unchanged from the comparable month in 2024.
