Robust December for Canadian Furniture and Building Supply Sales

Canadian retail furniture store sales in December 2020 increased 5.0% over the same month in 2019 to $1.1 billion (CAD). This rise was recorded despite sales dropping 9.5% compared to November due to increased pandemic lockdowns. Building material stores jumped 19.9% in December to $4.0 billion but saw a 2.3% decline from November.  Overall Canadian retail trade increased 1.4% in 2020 to $606 billion. Total retail sales declined for the first time since April, with December sales falling 3.4% to $53.4 billion from November but up 3.3% from the prior year. See Statistics Canada
