January Kitchen and Bath Cabinet Sales Grow Despite Decline in Quantity
U.S. kitchen and bath cabinet sales in January were $225.8 million, 6.5% higher than the comparable month in 2022, according to the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association’s (KCMA) monthly “Trend of Business” member survey. However, the number of cabinets sold was down 14.4% from January 2022. Semi-custom sales improved 13.2% from January 2022 to $124 million.
Canadian Building Permits Slow in January
Canadian building permits in January fell 4% from December 2022 to $9.8 billion (CAD) and were 5% lower than the comparable month in 2022. Residential authorizations dropped 6.6% from December to $6.1 billion and decreased 10.1% from January 2022. Single-family totals reached $2.7 billion, down 2.9% from December and 21.7% from the prior year. Multi-family levels declined

February Consumer Confidence Weakens
U.S. consumer confidence in February registered at 102.9, dropping 3.1 points from January, according to The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index. The index, measuring current business and labor market conditions, rose 1.7 points to 152.8 in February. Construction Investment Strengthens in Canada
Canadian building construction investment in January was up 1.5% from December 2022 to $20.4 billion (CAD). Residential construction spending increased 1.9% from December to $14.9 billion. Seasonally adjusted single-family construction spending rose 2.4% to $8 billion. Multi-unit levels grew 1.3% to $6.8 billion in January. Non-residential totals were 0.5% higher in January at $5.6 billion.
2023 North American Capacity Report Available Now
CPA published its 2023 North American Capacity Report summarizing the annual production capacity of particleboard, medium density fiberboard (MDF), hardboard and engineered wood siding and trim plants in North America, as reported by producers. Seasonally adjusted shipments for all U.S. manufacturing industries in January rose 0.7% from December 2022 to $547.8 billion.
