April Furniture Orders Drop
U.S. residential furniture factory orders in April decreased 20% from the comparable month in 2021 but rose 4% from the same period in 2019. In April, 70% of participants reported decreases. Furniture shipments grew 13% from April 2021 and up 6% year-to-date. With new orders still outpacing shipments, backlogs climbed 9% from April 2021. See Smith

Uniboard to Invest in New Particleboard Line
Uniboard, Laval, QC, announced a $250 million (CAD) investment to build a new particleboard press line at its Val-d’Or plant. Construction will begin this summer and is expected to be complete in 2025. The new project will add approximately 190 jobs. See Uniboard
U.S. Architectural Billings Fall in May
The May Architecture Billings Index (ABI) fell three points to 53.5 according to The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Economics & Market Research Group. May Canadian Housing Starts Increase
The monthly standalone seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of Canadian housing starts in May was 287,257 units, up 8% from April. The SAAR of urban starts rose 8% from April to 264,162. June Consumer Confidence Declines
U.S. consumer confidence in June registered at 98.7, falling 4.5 points from May, according to The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index. The index measuring current business and labor market conditions, dropped slightly to 147.1 from 147.4 in May. The short-term outlook for income, business and the labor market decreased 7.3 points from May to 66.4.
U.S. Home Sales Up in May
U.S. sales of new single-family homes in May were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 696,000, a 10.7% increase from April but 5.9% lower than the comparable month last year.
