Canadian Housing Starts Increase in December

The standalone monthly seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of Canadian housing starts in December 2020 was 239,052 units, up 1.2% from November. The SAAR of urban starts fell 12.8% in December. Multiple urban starts decreased 15.1% and single-family levels fell 5.5% from November.

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) uses the six-month trend measure “as a complement to the monthly SAAR of housing starts to account for considerable swings in monthly estimates and obtain a more complete picture of Canada’s housing market.”  See CMHC
