Architectural Billings Increase in January

The Architecture Billings Index (ABI) in January rose 0.1 point to 52.2 over December 2019, while design contracts increased 2.7 points to 56.0, indicating modest growth according to The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Economics & Market Research Group. January billings decreased again in the Northeast, while architecture firms in all other regions reported growth for the month, especially the South. Firms in all specializations saw increases in January.

The ABI is produced from the AIA’s monthly Work-on-the-Boards survey, which measures whether architectural firms’ “billings increased, decreased, or stayed the same for the month ended.” A score lower than 50 indicates a decline in billings from the preceding period. See AIA
