Architectural Billings Increase in December

The Architecture Billings Index (ABI) in December 2019 rose 0.6 points to 52.5 over November, indicating modest growth according to The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Economics & Market Research Group. December billings decreased in the Northeast, while architecture firms in all other regions reported growth for the month. Firms in all specializations saw increases in December, especially those focused on commercial/industrial projects.  Billings in 2019 strengthened throughout the U.S. as the year progressed, with the exception of the Northeast which experienced flat or declining billings every month.

The ABI is produced from the AIA’s monthly Work-on-the-Boards survey, which measures whether architectural firms’ “billings increased, decreased, or stayed the same for the month ended.” A score lower than 50 indicates a decline in billings from the preceding period. See  AIA
