December U.S. Housing Starts at 13-Year High

U.S. housing starts reached a 13-year high in December 2019. The seasonally adjusted annual rate of starts totaled 1.61 million, up 16.9% from the revised November estimate and 40.8% higher than December 2018. Single-family housing starts rose 11.2% from November to 1.06 million. For the full year, starts were up 3.2% over 2018.

U.S. building permits in December were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.42 million, decreasing 3.9% from the previous month but up 5.8% from the year-ago period in 2018.  Single-family authorizations were down 0.5% from November at 916,000.  See U.S. Census Bureau
