Lawsuit Against EU on Biomass Neutrality Policy

Plaintiffs from six countries, including the United States, filed a lawsuit against the European Union (EU) regarding its 2018 Renewable Energy Directive’s (RED II). The lawsuit challenges the EU’s claim that burning wood pellets is renewable and carbon neutral and states it will instead decimate forests and increase emissions. The case cites scientific evidence that biomass power plants produce more emissions per unit of energy than coal plants and asks that forest wood be ineligible for EU member-state renewable energy subsidies and targets.
