Canadian Building Permits Down in January

Canadian building permits in January totaled $8.4 billion (CAD), down 5.5% from December 2018’s record high and off 0.1% from the comparable month in 2018.  Residential authorizations increased 1.6% from December to $5.4 billion in January, and were 1.3% higher than the year-ago period.  The value of single-family homes rose 3.1% to $2.1 billion and were down 21.6% from January 2018.  Multi-family homes inched upward from December by 0.7% to $3.3 billion and jumped 23.6% from January 2018. Non-residential building permits decreased 15.8% to $3 billion in January and were 2.4% lower than the year prior.  See Statistics Canada
