U.S. Housing Starts Down in December

U.S. housing starts in December 2018 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.08 million, down 11.2% above the revised November estimate, and 10.9% from the comparable month in 2017. Single‐family housing starts fell 6.7% from November to 758,000.

Building permits in December were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.33 million, up 0.3% from the revised November rate and 0.5% higher than the year-ago period. Single‐family authorizations decreased 2.2% from the prior month to 829,000. See U.S. Census Bureau
