ACC Presents Webinar on Formaldehyde Risk Assessment
Dr. Kimberly White, Senior Director and lead staff member for the American Chemistry Council’s (ACC) Formaldehyde Panel, gave an excellent presentation for CPA Board and EPAC members this week on the status of U.S. EPA risk assessment of formaldehyde. Dr. White provided a general overview of two risk evaluation processes that are either currently reviewing, or may soon review, formaldehyde – the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) risk assessment and the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) risk evaluation. She noted the differences in both and highlighted the work that the ACC Formaldehyde Panel is doing to ensure the best available science is considered in these reviews.
Dr. White also noted that the EPA will decide as early as January 2019 whether to list formaldehyde as a priority chemical for review under the TSCA risk evaluation procedure. Should formaldehyde be included in the next list of priority chemicals, a review process would commence with several opportunities for public comment that could carry through the end of 2022. CPA, through its membership in the ACC Formaldehyde Panel, will track developments closely and be prepared to fully engage in the process should the EPA decide to review formaldehyde under TSCA.
