Canadian Building Permits Up 0.4% in August

Canadian building permits in August totaled $8.1 billion, up 0.4% from July and 4.3% higher than the comparable period in 2017. Non-residential authorizations were up 8.8% from July at $3.2 billion and up 14.2% from last year. Residential permits fell 4.4% in August to $5 billion and were down 1.2% from the year prior. Single-family homes decreased 5.2% to $2.2 billion, while multi-family dwelling permits fell 3.8% from July to $2.7 billion. Year-to-date single authorizations fell 13.5% from August 2017 and multi-family permits were up 11.8% over the same period last year. See Statistics Canada
