Canadian Non-Residential Construction Rises in the Second Quarter

Canadian non-residential building construction in the second quarter totaled $14.3 billion, rising 1.4% from the first quarter and 7.8% higher than the year ago period. Non-residential investment grew in six provinces with the largest increase registering in Ontario.

Commercial construction spending increased 1.6% from the first quarter to $8.1 billion and rose 4.9% from the same quarter in 2017. Industrial levels were up 4.8% to $2.3 billion from the first quarter and were 20.2% higher than the year prior. Institutional investment decreased 0.9% in the second quarter to $4.0 billion but was 7.6% higher than the comparable period in 2017. See Statistics Canada
