Canadian Truck Driver Shortages Impact Wood Products Industry

The shortage of truck drivers in Canada has begun to significantly impact the Canadian wood products industry, resulting in shipment and production delays. Companies have been struggling to recruit new drivers to replace the estimated 10,000 truck drivers who retire every year in Canada. Currently, truck drivers over the age of 55 represent approximately 26% of the total, a percentage that is expected to almost double to 50% by the year 2024. Many companies within the wood products industry have reported that the shortage of drivers is directly responsible for their own fourth quarter shortages, with some seeing significant impacts to capacity levels due to inability to efficiently transport materials.
