U.S. Housing Starts Down in December

U.S. housing starts in December were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.192 million, down 8.2% from the revised November estimate and 6% below the comparable month last year. Single-family housing starts fell 11.8% from November to 836,000. Housing starts for 2017 totaled 1.202 million, rising 2.4% above 2016.

U.S. building permits in December were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.302 million, 0.1% below November but up 2.8% from the same month in 2016. Single-family authorizations rose 1.8% above November to 881,000.  A total estimate of 1.263 million housing units were authorized by building permits in 2017, 4.7% higher than 2016.
