Canadian Non-Residential Construction Up in Fourth-Quarter

Canadian non-residential building construction in the fourth quarter 2017 totaled $13.7 billion, up 1.6% from the previous period. Non-residential investment grew in five provinces with the largest increase registering in Ontario. Commercial construction spending increased 0.5% to $7.8 billion in the fourth quarter. Industrial levels were up 3.4% to $2 billion, and institutional investment increased 3.1% from the third quarter to $3.9 billion.

Total investment in non-residential building construction for 2017 increased 1.2% from the year prior. Both industrial and institutional construction spending grew from 2016, increasing 3.5% and 2.6% respectively. Spending on commercial building construction remained unchanged from 2016 to 2017.
