CPA Fall Meeting/MTD Symposium Concludes with Power-Packed Program and Record Attendance
The 2017 CPA Fall Meeting & inaugural Material, Technology and Design Symposium concluded last week with record high attendance, up 52% from 2016, a power-packed slate of speakers and unprecedented exhibitor participation. The new format, developed in partnership with Surface & Panel magazine, was designed to broaden CPA’s outreach to downstream manufacturers and enhance value for CPA members through a program focused on trends in materials, technology and design for panel processing. Initial member feedback has been strongly supportive and confirms that the Symposium is singularly the best vehicle to bring together the entire supply chain for networking and education. As another measure of success, several non-member companies expressed interest in joining the association. CPA will conduct a follow-up survey to receive more quantitative feedback from participants.
Special thanks to the following meeting sponsors for their support of this valuable member benefit: Platinum Level (Arauco, Duraplay); Gold level (Boise Cascade, Georgia-Pacific Wood Products, Roseburg) and nearly 30 Silver Sponsors. A complete list of sponsors is available online. CPA is grateful to Surface & Panel magazine for speaker, exhibitor and participant recruitment which were instrumental in making the Symposium a success.
Presenters along with committee and Board meetings addressed a number of important topics that will inform CPA’s initiatives in 2018. A few highlights from the meeting are described below.
Design, Digital Printing, Office Furniture, Retail, Residential and Distribution Presentations Pack a Powerful Punch
CPA Fall Meeting attendees enjoyed a diverse program of speakers covering downstream markets including Eric Wolff of California Closets, Sylvain Garneau of Groupe Lacasse and Chairman of BIFMA, Chris Lefeber of Quest Engineering, Amanda Smith of Opto International and Jon Wenger of Genesis Products. The world of design, as it relates to industry products, was well-addressed by world-famous industrial designer Karim Rashid and Renee Hytry Derrington of Formica. Distribution networks and industry products were highlighted by Ray Prozzillo of A&M Supply and current Chairman of the North American Building Material Distribution Association (NBMDA). Future trends in digital printing were illuminated by Don Kuser of North American Plywood Corp and Ron Gilboa of Keypoint Intelligence/InfoTrends. Additionally, Ashley Goodin of the Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI) shared insights into AWI’s process for updating its technical standards. Many questions and discussions were sparked by the presentations and continued throughout the meeting.
Symposium Welcomes SCAD Faculty & Students
CPA was pleased to host a number of students and faculty from the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD), who participated in both days of the Symposium. The students and faculty listened to many of the speakers, toured the exhibit hall and asked substantive questions regarding CPA member products. Having now developed a relationship, CPA has spoken to SCAD faculty about future opportunities to interact with and educate SCAD students on composite panels and decorative surfaces. One immediate opportunity is that SCAD has asked CPA to help collect product samples for the school’s library and to provide a lunch and learn/CEU on industry products. If you are interested in providing samples to SCAD or participating in the lunch and learn/CEU, please contact Allyson O’Sullivan.
