U.S. Housing Starts End Year Strong

U.S. housing starts in December 2016 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.23 million, up 11.3% from the revised November rate and 5.7% above the comparable month in 2015. Single-family starts increased 4% in December to 795,000.

Building permits in December totaled a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.21 million, 0.2% below the revised November rate but 0.7% higher than the same period a year earlier.  Single-family authorizations were up 4.7% to 817,000. 2016 permits totaled 1.187 million, up 0.4% from 2015.  See U.S. Census Bureau
