The United States Trade Representative (USTR) proposed new tariffs under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 on goods from dozens of countries, including Canada and Mexico, based on their “failure to impose and effectively enforce a prohibition” of forced-labor products from entering global trade. Importantly, the newly proposed tariffs do not impact goods that comply with the U.S.- Mexico- Canada Agreement (USMCA) or modify existing tariffs under Section 232, including U.S. imports of kitchen cabinets and upholstered furniture.
CPA is filing comments opposing the proposed tariffs for Canada and Mexico, which already have formally banned forced-labor goods. The public comment period runs through July 6, 2026. See USTR. More Info: Andy O’Hare
