May U.S. Consumer Confidence Softens

U.S. consumer confidence registered at 93.1 in May, a decrease of 0.7 points from the adjusted April reading, according to The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index. The index measuring current business and labor market conditions fell 3.2 points in May to 121.2. The short-term outlook index for the income, business, and labor markets grew 1.0 points to 74.4 but remained below the 80-mark for the sixteenth straight month, indicating a potential recession.
