U.S. construction spending in January reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $2.19 trillion, reflecting a 0.3% decline from December but a 1.0% increase year over year.
Total public and private residential spending fell 0.8% month over month to $945.15 billion, but rose 2.3% compared with January 2025. Nonresidential spending totaled $1.25 trillion, remaining unchanged from December and decreasing 0.1% from the same month in 2025. Private construction spending fell 0.6% from December and 0.1% from January 2025, totaling $1.66 trillion.
Educational construction spending was $140.12 billion, down 0.4% from the prior month but up 1.4% from January 2025. Healthcare construction spending increased 0.5% from December to $68.98 billion, but shrunk 0.4% from a year earlier.
