The monthly standalone seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of Canadian housing starts in January was 239,739 units, 3.1% higher than December 2024. The SAAR of urban starts in January increased 2.6% from the previous month to 220,643. Multiple urban starts rose 3.9% to 176,260, and single-family levels were 44,383, declining 2.4% compared to December. The six-month trend in housing starts shrunk 2.5% to 236,892 units in January.
The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) uses the six-month trend measure “as a complement to the monthly SAAR of housing starts to account for considerable swings in monthly estimates and obtain a more complete picture of Canada’s housing market.” See CHMC
