January Building Permits Strengthen Year-Over-Year in Canada

In January, Canadian building permits totaled $12.8 billion (CAD), declining 3.2% from December 2024 but increasing 16.9% from the comparable month last year. Residential authorizations decreased 3.4% from the prior month but rose 29.3% to $8.8 billion year-over-year. Single-family permits totaled $3.0 billion, up 3.8% from December and 16.6% from January 2024. Multi-family levels were $5.8 billion in January, slipping 6.8% from December but surging 37.0% from the same month in 2024. Non-residential permits dipped 2.7% and 3.2% from January 2024 to $4.0 billion.
