EU Plans Reciprocal Tariffs for U.S. Imports Potentially Including Composite Panels

In response to tariffs on its aluminum and steel imports to the U.S., the European Union (EU) announced on March 12 plans to impose reciprocal tariffs in two phases in April.

The first phase will reinstate suspended tariffs on metal imports that were initially imposed in 2018 and 2020 when the U.S. similarly levied tariffs on these products. This phase targets U.S. metal products exports, among other items, and will take effect on April 1.

The second phase targets a broader range of products, which currently include composite panels, among other wood products. Over the next few weeks, the EU Commission will gather feedback from EU countries to finalize the list of products subject to tariffs. Wood products could be removed from the list. It is expected that these tariffs will be imposed by April 13. The European Panel Federation is closely monitoring these developments and will convene soon to establish a policy position.
