U.S. housing starts in December 2025 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.40 million, up 6.2% from the revised November figure but 7.3% below the comparable month in 2024. Single-family starts increased 4.1% from November to 981,000. Housing starts totaled an estimated 1.36 million units for the year, dipping 0.6% from 2024.
U.S. building permits in December were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.45 million, growing 4.3% from November but 2.2% lower than the same month in 2024. Single-family authorizations declined 1.7% from November to 881,000 in December. Housing permits totaled an estimated 1.43 million units for the year, down 3.6% from 2024. See U.S. Census Bureau
