December Building Permits Strengthen in Canada

In December 2024, Canadian building permits totaled $13.1 billion (CAD), increasing 11.0% from November and 34.9% from the comparable month in 2023. Residential authorizations grew 21.2% from the prior month and rose 51.5% to $9.0 billion year-over-year. Single-family permits totaled $2.9 billion, up 1.8% from November and 1.4% from December 2023. Multi-family levels were $6.1 billion in December, surging 33.3% from November and 98.4% from the same month in 2023. Non-residential permits dipped 5.9% from the prior month but improved 9.2% from December 2023 to $4.2 billion.
