Canadian Housing Starts Improve in September

The monthly standalone seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of Canadian housing starts in September was 223,808 units, 5.1% higher than August. The SAAR of urban starts in September was up 5.5% from the previous month at 210,002. Multiple urban starts rose 5.5% to 163,400, and single-family levels were 46,602, increasing 5.4% compared to August. The six-month trend in housing starts declined 1.9% to 243,759 in September.

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) uses the six-month trend measure “as a complement to the monthly SAAR of housing starts to account for considerable swings in monthly estimates and obtain a more complete picture of Canada’s housing market.” See CHMC
