The monthly standalone seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of Canadian housing starts in April was 267,330 units, up 8% from March. The SAAR of urban starts rose 10% from March to 245,324. Multiple urban starts jumped 14% to 178,092 and single-family levels gained 1% in March to 67,232. The trend in housing starts in April was up 1.8% at 257,846 units.
The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) uses the six-month trend measure “as a complement to the monthly SAAR of housing starts to account for considerable swings in monthly estimates and obtain a more complete picture of Canada’s housing market.” See CMHC
