April Canadian Housing Starts Down

The monthly standalone seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of Canadian housing starts in April was 240,229 units, 0.8% lower than March. The SAAR of urban starts in April was mostly unchanged from the previous month at 220,123. Multiple urban starts dipped 0.7% to 178,462, and single-family levels rose 2.3% from March to 41,661. The six-month trend in housing starts declined 2.2% to 238,585 in April.

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) uses the six-month trend measure “as a complement to the monthly SAAR of housing starts to account for considerable swings in monthly estimates and obtain a more complete picture of Canada’s housing market.” See CHMC
